Motherhood - The Second Time Around

So much about being a second-time mom seems exhausting - taking care of child No. 1, refurbishing somewhat worn maternity clothes, trying to figure out which shoes to wear since none fit anymore. And then there's the angst of "second-time shower."

Here's what all those friends, sisters and aunts of second-time moms should remember -there's never been a better excuse for a party than a baby, and there's never been a more deserving person for a baby shower than a woman who already has a little one at home.

This is a time to celebrate motherhood again, with a more mature approach. Moms know their babies can live for months in rompers. Twelve charming church outfits in size 6 months are overkill. Think past the silly shrink-wrapped gift sets and think toward what a second baby and the mom really need.

Think diapers.

Don't settle for sacks of disposable diapers, however. Set the tone for this party with a baby-friendly idea - place a stunning diaper cake, decorated to match the theme of the shower, in the center of the table. Every experienced mom knows there's no such thing as too many diapers, and every shower deserves at least one item that strikes a fanciful yet totally practical note.

Next, think logical.

The first baby certainly had a favorite blanket and won't be eager to donate it to the new occupant of the house. Luxurious baby blankets will comfort both mom and infant. An exquisite baby blanket, one with satin, soft knit, a vintage look, or to wrap the baby for religious blessings, is something to be cherished for a lifetime.

Think elegant.

Little girls are so special. Charming baby jewelry, specially crafted to honor a daughter's significant moments in her early life, shows others she is the light of her parents' lives. Pearl bracelets and necklaces, sized to fit babies and toddlers, are perfect gifts for showers, to mark a baby's christening or commemorate her name day.

Finally, think long-term.

Gifts at showers for second-time moms acknowledge this bundle of joy will grow quickly. The baby will need softer-than-air hairbrushes and combs, all the better if they are of keepsake quality. Parents will want a special place to save that first penny, lock of hair and loose tooth.

With gifts that are fun and functional all in one, both second-time mom and her new baby will know there's joy in every heart with the arrival of that newest family member.
