Nursing Baby to Sleep - Good Idea Or a Bad One?

Is nursing baby to sleep a good idea? I mean, we mothers know that babies often fall sleep nursing. After all, the breast is a great source of comfort to them and is a place they feel safe and familiar. In addition, the fat in mom's milk helps make baby sleepy, and the warmth of her arms and sound of her heartbeat are relaxing too. All of which add up to the perfect environment to succumb to sleep.

And we all know babies who seemingly won't fall asleep unless they are nursing. At least, nursing is what they prefer. Nursing baby to sleep does work, but is it really in baby's (and the parent's) best interest?

Some insist that if a baby is allowed to fall asleep on the breast, they will never learn to sleep on their own or without mom's help. This may or may not be true, depending on the baby. Some moms don't have a problem with this. As one mom put it, "I nursed my baby to sleep until he weaned. I figured, I would never have that time back, so I just enjoyed it." Many nursing mothers feel the same way.

Moms, rest assured that you can follow your heart on this issue. If you nurse your baby to sleep, stop feeling guilty! This is a perfectly normal way to encourage baby to fall asleep. Sleeping without nursing is a developmental milestone your child will surely reach when he or she is ready. So, if nursing baby to sleep works for your family, go ahead and continue doing it.

If, however, you are not happy with the arrangement, there are steps you can take to transition baby to fall asleep without you. Instead of nursing baby to sleep, nurse only until baby is almost asleep, and then remove him from the breast. He may fuss at first, but if you are consistent he'll understand that you mean business. Elizabeth Pantley offers several tips for transitioning baby away from the breast in her book "The No-Cry Sleep Solution".

If you're concerned about tooth decay, rest assured. Babies get cavities despite nursing, not because of it. Nursing at night will not make your child more prone to cavities. In addition, many moms find that the act of breastfeeding at night helps them get more rest. Instead of fussing with an unhappy baby who needs to be rocked to sleep, they enjoy the ease of latching baby onto the breast and falling into a relaxing sleep.

Another tip that works for many moms and babies is "wearing" baby to sleep in a sling. You can nurse the baby until he's sleepy, remove him from the nipple and walk him in a sling close to your body until he's asleep again. Using this tool, you can even get other things done while "putting baby down" for his nap. Go for a quick walk outside or do some light housework. Baby will enjoy the familiar comfort of your body and the sound of your heartbeat and know he's safe with you close. Eventually you will not have to nurse your child to sleep at all. As with most things, do what works for your family.

Baby and Toddlers Clothes - The Evolution of Children's Clothing

Children's clothing evolved as with all the things that are now present today.

From the beginning, children's' clothing used color to separate the genders. Especially in the olden days where little boys looked like little girls, the distinction can be made by the color of the clothes. Girls wore pink and little boys wore blue, this is as much true today as it is in the era of days gone by.

Because of historical accounts available like painting and photographs, it was not easily distinguished if a child was male or female. Thus, not only do the clothes determined the gender but the general appearance as well. This was manifested by the hair style that they were told to wear. It became a strong convention that little girls wear pretty dresses and their hair long while the little boys were told to wear the pants and sport short hair. However due to the evolution of time, little girls of today have adopted to wearing pants but the day hasn't come yet where the boys adopted the dresses of girls!

In our modern world today, a general convention exists that girls are able to wear the clothes of boys but never the other way around. But that wasn't the case in the 19th century where little girls and boys were dressed alike. Although during that time, girls were not allowed to dress in pants, otherwise, there was not much difference in the way they were dressed.

Up to the time of the second world war, clothes associated with girls were dresses, pantalets, smocks and pinafores.

Dresses

This was the basic clothing of girls up to the second world war since it was not everyday occurrence that girls wore pants or shorts before the war.

Bloomers

This was another staple in the little girls' clothing where it served its purpose of
providing an alternative option to the restrictive and binding fashion sense during the 19th century. This can be attributed to Amelia Bloomer born 1818 - 1894 who was an American reformer espousing this cause. But the bloomer concept must be credited to Elizabeth Smith Miller as she was creator of the bloomers. Although this type of garment did not bloom at all.

Rompers

These were worn both by the girls and boys that were used primarily for play time. By the end of the second world war, rompers were basic staples for little girls wardrobe. They were usually used as costumes or uniforms for gym classes of girls.

Smocks

This is one generic children's clothing of years gone by. As this was so common, different styles, accessories, adornments, and other details filled the repertoire of how a smock can look like. There were smocks of different colors, smocks with different buttoning styles - buttons located at the back, in the front, or on the side. There were also smocks with collars, with trims, with ties, with pockets, with belts, etc. It was usual in the 1950s that smocks of identical cut were bought by mothers for their children.

Pinafores

This was a very essential piece of garment for the girls' wardrobe as they were usually worn by little girls of Europe and America.

Pantalets

These were worn both by boys and girls. Usually, boys wore plain pantalets while girls wore the fancier ones. But there were some boys who like to wear fancy Pantalets too.

Sailor suits

This was basically a boy's garment but it became a unisex garment as girls started to wear sailor suits too.

Tips For Discreet Breastfeeding in Public

If you're a new Mom who is nursing your baby you may be nervous about doing so in public.

Or perhaps you are disturbed by media reports of women who are harassed for breastfeeding in public and are considering pumping your milk to give your baby when you leave home.

Here are some tips for discreet breastfeeding that have worked for many Moms. Hopefully they will help you feel more comfortable nursing in public so you can avoid the inconvenience of pumping and preparing bottles.

1) Before you have your baby, attend a La Leche League or other breastfeeding support group meeting.

Unfortunately in our Society that gives lip service to the benefits of breastfeeding, it is still rare to see Moms nursing in public, and so most of us grow up having our own babies never having seen another woman nurse.

Going to an LLL meeting and seeing how other Moms nurse their babies discreetly and confidently can boost your own confidence. They can also share with you tips that will make nursing in public easier for you.

2) Invest in a baby sling.

These are wonderful for making life with a baby easier all around, but one thing they're great for is discreet breastfeeding. I can't count the times someone approached me in a store and commented on my baby having no idea that s/he was latched on and nursing! The fabric of the sling can be adjusted to come up over the baby's head (yet most babies don't mind this like they do a blanket), or you can use the extra fabric on the "tail" to cover baby.

3) After your baby is born, practice nursing in front of a mirror or a friend to perfect your technique.

Once you and baby are getting to be old pros at the latch on, you can most likely do so in just a couple of seconds.

4) Nurse at the first signs of hunger.

A nursing baby generally draws less attention than a screaming one! So latch your baby on as soon as you notice that s/he is hungry...rooting, sucking on fist, grimacing face, etc. A crying baby also makes you nervous and you and baby may take longer to get latched on comfortably.

5) Try turning your body away while you latch on.

If you're sitting at a table in a restaurant, simply turn your body away from the table briefly while you latch baby on, then resume your normal position.

6) Try nursing clothes.

These are designed to cover your belly for more discreet breastfeeding. Or simply wear a thin top under a cardigan or other shirt. You can also make your own nursing top by cutting slits in a tank and wearing it under another shirt. And always pull up your shirt from the bottom instead of unbuttoning from the top to nurse.

7) Bring a book or large purse to set in your lap to camouflage.

Your diaper bag would also work. Set it in front of baby on your knees while you latch baby on. Or hold a book so that your baby's head and your breast are out of view.

And lastly...

8) Be confident!

You are doing something that is best for you and baby and that billions of women all over the world for thousands of years have done. Be proud of yourself and give passersby a warm smile. You'd be surprised how often people will smile back or even approach with a commendation or anecdote about their own children.

Enjoy nursing your baby!

Unique Diaper Bags

With so many different types of diaper bags in the market, many buyers feel the need for unique diaper bags that stands out from the rest. diaper bags are available in trendy, innovative and unique designs. These are made from quality fabrics including leather, nylon, quilted micro fiber, vinyl coating and suede.

Many parents take efforts to make individual style statements through the diaper bags that they carry. Many feel that the bag they carry must convey something about the baby or its family and their values or beliefs. This is pretty similar to college students wearing their varsity sweatshirts with slogans, except it is done in a more subtle way with diaper bags.

People adopt many different ways to create unique diaper bags. Some decide to make their own diaper bags, while others do not hesitate to pay a lot of money for a designer diaper bag that is the envy of other parents. Diaper bags in exotic fabrics are also in vogue, as people do not mind the extra cost of maintenance if it makes them seem unique.

Most diaper bags contain the basic requirements such as multiple compartments, diaper holders and bottle holders. The features that make them unique are their colors, prints, fabric, design and shape. For instance, a father would not like to carry a feminine looking diaper bag with big floral prints. For fathers, a diaper bag, which is sporty, will be more preferable. A diaper bag with a football shape or design will truly make it unique.

Some diaper bags are unique because of the extra items that come along with it, such as purses, key holders and coin pouches. There are others that come with organizers and diaries to keep a list of emergency numbers and baby related information handy.

Companies that make diaper bags keep in mind the fact that the bags must not only be stylish and useful, but also innovative. They focus on bringing out as many varieties as possible to keep up with the growing demand for unique designs.

Unwanted Love Chp. 10

Nicole and Chelsea gave me genuine smiles as they each took one of my hands and pulled me to the set. We came up to the boys, and they all stared at me with wide eyes. "What?" I asked self consciously. "You look..." Nick trailed off as if he was struggling to find the right word, "Beautiful." I felt the blood rush to my face, and I looked away before it became too noticeable. "Thanks." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~* I'm the love interest of Nick! What are the freaking odds?! The original plan was Nick and Nicole's character to be, but they made Nicole be Kevin's, and me be Nick's...Oh joy. We've been filming now for two weeks. It's been loads of fun. Joe just got done pranking Chelsea, so now, she has to find a way to get him back. Those two fight like brother and sister. Chels told me they went out a few years ago, but they liked it better being friends. Miley...well, Miley had a hard time that night when I told her everything. She had cried for an hour straight when I told her what had happened to my parents, and where my brother was. That's right, brother. Not Alex, but an older one. His name is Hunter. He's 22, and in the Marines. He's been in Iraq for the better part of this last year. "So, are you ready to start recording?" Joe asked me as we waited in the lobby area of Hollywood Records for their father and John. "Yes!" I squealed. They chuckled. Once again, my stupid bangs fell in front of my face. I grabbed Nick's wrist, ignoring the weird feeling it gave me, and slipped my hair ...

Red Hat Party Games for Silly Ladies Wearing Purple Dresses

Another very interesting party concept is having a Red Hat Party. There is a red hat society, which is a group of women who wear red hats and purple dresses to the parties. The poems by Jenny Joseph is being considered the main inspiration for having these Red Hat Parties. These parties can be made really interesting with the addition of Red Hat Party Games in which everyone will have a chance to participate.

Don't Dance With A Red Hat

This is a game which will definitely surprise all your guests. In this Red Hat Party Game, you need to tell your men audience that they must not dance with the lady who has a red hat on. Now what happens in this game is that a lady is given a red hat to wear and she will go to another lady who is dancing with her partner and will put the red hat on her head and that lady will have to find another partner. Now the lady who just lost a partner will go to another couple and will put the hat on the head of another lady who will then have to find a new partner and thus the game will go on and on till the participants are invited to play another game.

Grab The Candies

Well this has been a very interesting Red Hat Party Game that I am going to share with you. In this game, you have to have plenty of candies filled in a bowl. Put the bowl on the table and ask the ladies to grab as many candies as they can. After this, some ladies will grab one or two and others might take a handful of candies. Now when this process is over just ask the ladies that they do not need to eat the candies as yet, but now for each candy that they have taken, they have to share something about themselves. This game will be really exciting when everyone will start telling about themselves for each candy that they have taken.

There can be a lot of other Red Hat Party Games that you can think of, so that all the guests just have a really good time. Just remember that the games that you are going to design must be really interesting and should be designed as a professional as the ones that you have read and better.

Secrets to Getting Married and Living Happily Ever After

As a young girl, I developed a dim view of marriage.

Most of my friends' mothers tiptoed around their fathers. When I was
nine years old, my friend Karen's aunt actually sat us down and gave us
tips on how to get a man and keep him happy (it didn't escape my notice
that she made dinner, mopped the floor, and changed diapers while her
prince slept on the couch. I never even made eye contact with the man;
he remained comatose for the length of our acquaintance).

As I got older, magazines offered advice on how to get a man to commit
and how to decipher his feelings (expecting the guy to express them
would be out of question).

I got the message: To be a success in life, I needed a man. That they
were a lot of work was the price I had to pay for being a woman.

Like most little girls, I was sold from birth on the wedding fairy
tale: the giant ring, the dress, the honeymoon in the sun. But, while the
wedding looked like fun, life beyond it looked like the job from hell.

So it's no surprise that when I got into my 20s I attracted the wrong
men. They all feared commitment or had some sort of emotional
entanglement that prevented them from starting a real relationship with me.

After many years and much soul searching, I discovered that the men
weren't the problem. I was the problem. I attracted men who could not
commit because I didn't want to commit. Deep down I believed marriage would
bore me at best, kill me at worst.

But, still, a small part of me did want to get married and wanted to
believe that lifelong happy relationships were indeed possible. I
determined what I wanted in a relationship, what would make me feel secure,
at peace, and bring me joy. I wrote down a list of the qualities my
perfect husband would offer.

Since I had a history of dating men who disappointed me (liars,
cheaters, guys who just stopped calling or showing up), I knew what I
qualities I didn't want. I wanted somebody loyal, loving, reliable, successful,
and fun (most married people are bored out of their minds, so 'fun' was
key for me).

I wrote an affirmation: "I am happily married to a loyal, loving,
reliable, successful, fun man" and wrote it 25 times a day with feeling
(putting on a CD that really got me going facilitated the process).

Within a couple of weeks, I felt a shift inside myself. I believed that
I could marry a man who'd make me happy. I believed I could be myself
without worrying about him cheating on me, abandoning me, or smothering
me to death.

Within several months I attracted the man I married. Fifteen years
later, we are still in love and having fun. Yesterday, May 2, we celebrated
our 13th wedding anniversary.

You can attract and marry the man of your dreams, too:

1) Determine what you don't want

2) Determine what you do want

3) Manifest it by focusing on it and by writing an affirmation about it

5) Say it out loud while you're in the shower or some other private place (no need to blurt it out in the company break room)

4) Keep it up for at least 30 days. Be consistent

5) Notice the changes within yourself

6) Notice the changes in the men you attract.

It worked for me, and it will work for you. Go for it.

Cotton - The Fabric of Society

Chances are that the first fabric to touch your skin was cotton. It is by far the most common and versatile fabric known to man. Baby diapers used to be almost exclusively cotton and are still popular among many families.

The earliest use of cotton has been estimated to have occurred between 3000 to 5000 BC. and was worn by the Egyptians as far back as 2500 BC. It has been a major factor in the world economy and continues to be the leading commercial fiber in the United States since around 1800. Cotton is grown in semi-arid regions of the southern United States and at one time was called King Cotton as it was the primary commercial concern of the south. Cotton is still a major American export and it even has its own museum in South Carolina.

One of the most amazing properties of cotton as a fabric is its ability to breathe. Cotton can retain nearly 30 times its weight in water. Thus it quickly absorbs perspiration from the wearer and releases it to the air through evaporation. Other remarkable properties include the propensity to stand up to high temperatures for sterilizing and ironing without disintegrating. It whitens well with chlorine bleach and absorbs dyes easily. It wears well and stands up to friction. It is often blended with polyester, wool, or other fibers.

Cotton fiber is gathered from the seed pod of the cotton plant and ginned. A gin is a machine that separates the seeds from the cotton fiber. It was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793 and is one of the revolutionary events in cotton processing. The fiber is then spun into thread and woven into fabric. The commercial process is actually far more complicated and complex but those are the general steps.

Cotton fabrics include muslin, flannel, gingham, seersucker, terry cloth, gauze, drill, swiss, duck, sateen, poplin, organdy, lawn, flannelette, percale, velveteen, outing flannel, whipcord, sailcloth, polished cotton, and others.

Currently there is a trend toward organically raised cotton. It uses compost and other natural fertilizers but no synthetic fertilizers, and utilizes ladybug introduction and other natural pest control measures. Earthtone cotton fabrics use no dyes, reducing the cost of the cotton up to 40% as compared to chemically dyed cotton. There is a return to naturally colored cotton. Not all cottons grow white. Some cottons can be grown that are brown, light purple and rust.

The finest cotton is considered by many to be Egyptian cotton. Fabric made from Egyptian cotton has a smooth, silky texture. Pima cotton is grown in the United States an exported around the world while Indian cotton is generally the least expensive and can be course.

Cotton has survived drought, boll weevils and seeds have crossed entire oceans on the wind. It makes a tough, useful fabric that will never go out of style.
